Following their relocation to LA, Eat Light Become Lights played their final UK show for the foreseeable future at Cargo in London recently. For those who missed this awesome spectacle, here's footage of the closing track 'White Horses'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VplRe3YM8U
You can't see them, but stage left were Byron and Nick on Guitar and noise boxes adding to the overall glorious cacophony. Great times!

In November we will be heading back into the studio to record new tracks for an upcoming split single. More on that as and when.

On December the 1st we will be doing a Telescopes set at Corsica Studios. Supports to be confirmed. This will be the first full band 'scopes set in London following the ATP show.

Ok, it's not an OUS show as such, but with outstanding effort by Dream Machine Records we have secured the Pig and Whistle in W10 to bring you a free entry event featuring The Telescopes (noise set), The Cush (over from the US on a European tour) and a super rare performance by Rohame (feat. Jodie from Narrows/Tropics, doom drone solo artist Anji Cheung and Byron & Nick from OUS). The Telescopes set will be played out across a film by Bridget Hayden.
The Pig and Whistle is located right by Latimer Road tube, the venue does legendary pizza, the beer is cheap and it'll cost you nothing to get in!
This is a DIY event run by the bands involved so we really hope you can make it along.

Made a stop off on way to the venue to buy wine, sidestepped 2 bottles for a fiver, just. I ate 2 bananas, JM ate a tomato. Arrive to about 31 people on stage, DI boxes flying everywhere, violins (yes plural) seem to be falling from the skies, massive selection of huge sexy amps, good feeling about the night.

Rumour Cubes were owners of violins. I like violins. Their violins were good violins. If I played violin I think I’d be in a band like Rumour Cubes, or just playing for pennies and cider on the seafront at Swanage. Their music was both sad and grand, like a gothic church losing its battle with gravity before being turned into luxury flats.

Orders of the British Empire owned the smashing amps. If I were to make a celebratory Keep fit DVD I’d ask OBE to soundtrack it, and be my ‘keep fit instructor to the stars type’, I wouldn’t make them wear lycra though, no one likes wearing lycra, I’d probably wear lycra. Amazing energy, massive music, smart, complex but hooky like watching one of those people that can do a Rubiks cube really fast.

Overhead the Albatross were on tour. Their songs were like the whoosh of warm air you get when you walk into a shop on a bitter winters day. If I were the ruler of a country I think I’d ask OTA to write my national anthem, one that contained no words just lots of yelling, like they did in their last song, I like it when a band yells together, maybe one day we’ll yell together, but not for anyone else, just for us.

Our setlist was; Neuralgia, Gora, Alchemist, Riggs Cutter, Jaded, Dismemberment. We started off a little sketchy, but got better; the new songs are feeling like not new songs, we pulled Jaded off particularly well (been a long time since we played it out) lots of friends turned up, people were very kind. I drank the last of the coffee from my thermos (I was desi) Lynch called me a cunt, I like that our friends can call us cunts, like yelling it brings people closer together.

The Telescopes - Limited Ed Vinyl Release

On March 28th, the first release on the 'Static Charge' imprint (STATIC1) will be released by Genepool Records. 'The Telescopes: Live. Aftertaste' on Ltd Heavy Vinyl, documents the tour we did last Feb and features some of the tracks from debut album 'Taste'. There's also a storming version of Sadness Pale (if we do say so ourselves!).
Although it's not released until March 28th, Genepool are taking pre orders now. It will be available worldwide so it's probably advisable to get in as soon as possible if you want a copy.

Happy New Year friends!

We hope you all had an enjoyable Xmas break! January is always a bit arse and while we can't really guarantee anything to brighten it up for you, by reading on you could be distracted for around 88 of the 2,678,400 seconds the month insists we all endure :)

We spent the time between Christmas and New Year over in Berlin laying down some tracks with Stephen Telescope. For anyone yet to experience New Year celebrations on the streets of that city, we can promise you it's ever so slightly unnerving! Brought up in a country that teaches it's youth that you can melt your face off with a sparkler in seconds, there was a definite chorus of tut's and finger wagging coming from our number! Anyway, time constraints were such that we were unable to arrange a show while there but all being well we will get that side of things sorted in the not too distant. There's little to tell on the recordings at the moment but we will keep you posted as and when things progress. There will be a couple of new releases from The Telescopes in the coming months, one of which will be a vinyl release on the new 'Static Charge' imprint. We have 2 lined up over the next month. It's gradually becoming a tradition that we play the first Rip This Joint of the year and right on cue we are there this Saturday (15th)! The night is curated by The Reactor Core is Splendid, it's the usual Â£2 and is the perfect ear bleeder to kick off your gig going year.
We follow that up on Friday February 11th with a Soho show @ 'Club for Losers', the West End's premier purveyors of filthy punk and dirty rock n roll.

Tonight Show Cancelled

Hey friends!

In light of the wonderland sweeping across London today, a number of bands have had to pull out of the 'Unsilent Night'. Added to this the concerns surrounding peoples ability to actually get to the gig, the decision has been taken to cancel the event and reschedule to another date in the New Year.
Anyone who has bought advance for this will no doubt be able to obtain a refund or simply use their ticket for the rescheduled date.
We are all pretty gutted and will now spend the rest of the day making obscene structures in the snow to vent our displeasure :(

As it stands, Wednesday's Telescopes show with The Urgz at Nambucca is still going ahead. Advance purchase of tickets will save you a few bob!

Hello everyone!
We hope your summer is treating you all well! As it slowly draws to a close, we will be getting busy again after a month or so of writing and sitting around in an Isleworth garage smoking too much. In-between said writing and smoking too much, we have somehow managed to put together another release (which you can all get your hands on for FREE!) and arrange a bunch of super cool shows to see out the summer. First up, the download...'Gora'. This track has made it into a handful of recent sets so some of you may be familiar with it. It's a short one for us but hopefully punches the correct part of the head. We've also thrown in a live version of 'Villains', recorded in Cardiff during the February Telescopes tour. For anyone wanting a physical release of this, we have also put together a strictly ltd run of 25 copies, available on 3.5" floppy disc. Ok, so now to the gigs...We begin at the end of July with two shows, one in Northampton and one in London. The line up for both nights will be ourselves alongside The Second Floor and The Urgz. The Second Floor are Manchester based and some of you may recognise the front man Nolan from his other job as Bassist in Spectrum. The Urgz, from Rugby, are the current project of Pete Bain aka Pete Bassman, ex Spacemen 3 / The Darkside. I think enough said on that line up! In August, we then play 3 more Telescopes shows in Southend, Brighton and London. As before, these will feature a full bodied set from the Taste era, played with the necessary brutality! OUS will be performing a support set at the Southend and London dates. We then round off our summer in September with the Hired Geeks all dayer in the East End, headlined by the superb Part Chimp! Off the back of some great reviews for VtaM, not least that of Julian Cope on Head Heritage, we have once again teamed up with Genepool Records and will be putting together an official release. The formats will be Digipak CD and 180gm Heavyweight Vinyl 12". The release date is 9th November 2009 and both formats will retail at £5.99. Pre-orders can be placed now at the Genepool Records store here. We will also carry stock at OUS shows.
Talking of shows we have some exciting gigs coming up over the next few months, further details of which will follow closer the time. Until then, we are at the Legion on Old Street EC1 on November 12th with Delorean (Madrid) and The Sigfred Sassoon. We are on first and the doors are 7.30. This show is FREE entry.

Finally it's here, release # four. We usually make hard work of getting new stuff out and this is no exception!
Anyway, here you are, the Villains to a Man E.P. Three tracks clocking in at 33 minutes.

These tracks have made up our set for most of the last 3 or 4 months so should be familiar to those of you who've been to a show. As with previous releases, we worked with Dan DNA from 'GoTAW' and Wayne 'Ternary'. It was recorded at the Bunker Studios, a new place set up in Isleworth Middlesex by them both.
As with the previous stuff we've put up on here, please feel free to share it about.

Hey friends, hope you're all well,
After playing it countless times at shows, the recorded version of 'Jaded' has now been added to our profile songs list on My Space. The recording makes up part of the forthcoming EP, so feel free to head over to our page and have a listen to what we've been up to in the studio these last few months. The others will go up in the not too distant.
On the live front, we've been invited back to the Camden Constitution this Saturday (16th) by 'Scul Hazzards' who are curating the May Rip This Joint night as part of their wider European tour. Anyone who is yet to attend one of these shows should really come down and see what all the fuss is about. The venue is perfect for this kind of music and the welcoming vibe has ensured that the RTJ shows are developing into really well attended nights.
Anyway, show kicks off at 8pm and it's a daft £2. Full details below and hopefully see some of you there!

Mixing for the Plasticism EP is almost done and there should hopefully be news on it in the very near future.
We have currently 2 shows coming up, the first being at the Camden constitution as part of the Rip This Joint night, curated for May by Skul Hazzards. May 16th, £2. Also playing will be Dethscalator, Skul Hazzards and Batrider. After that we're at the Catch 22 in Shoreditch on June 10th playing with Hey Colossus and Hag. Entry price is as yet unconfirmed.
The OUS. com is not currently being updated due to a site issue. Khyam who maintains all things RE the website is in Egypt and unable to offer much assistance. The site is still active, just temporarily out of order.

February update

Hello again! Right, as promised, we've been tucked away in the rehearsal room writing material for the new EP. We're planing a 12" release this time around and hopefully there will be something of a collaboration going on as well. We're in the studio early March and should have the EP ready for release late spring. All being well, the new tracks will be debuted live during the next bunch of shows we have coming up. There's hopefully some news to come regarding our inclusion on a superb compilation CD, as well as a cover version we are doing for another compilation to celebrate the opening of a new studio here in London. We'll fill you in on these details once we have something more concrete to tell you.
Right then, those shows. We have three lined up at present with the first of them being at the Bull & Gate, Kentish Town on Saturday 21st Feb with Real feal, Cove & Percival Gage. This is quickly followed by a support slot opening up for the legendary Sonic Boom (aka Pete Kember / Spacemen 3) as he brings his Spectrum tour to Oxford's Wheatsheaf on Tues 25th Feb. Also playing will be local psychedelics, Spiral 25. After that we return to London to curate the March Rip This Joint night at the superb Camden Constitution. We've picked a great line up for this with Silent Front, Art of Burning Water and a debut show for the Synth Noise freak out of Blacktron Invasion!
After this, we have a short break while Byron heads over to Canada for a month so pop along to a show and have a listen to the new stuff!

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to all our friends and those we've met this last year. we will be taking a self enforced break from shows for the first part of the year with our first set not until 21st Feb. During the time off we will be writing new material to be debuted at that gig. The plan is to put together more shows off our own back in '09 with the first of these being a gig for the 'Rip This Joint' people at the Camden Constitution on March 21st. We have already confirmed Art of Burning Water and Silent Front for this one. The new songs being written will be recorded as part of a series of EPs, the first of which we hope will be ready to put out by springtime.

Thanks to everyone who showed up at the Miller show on the 12th. It was a bad night of the week to stage such a gig but despite this the night was really well attended. Apologies must also be made to any of you who had to truncate your evening due to the overrunning stage times. This was an oversight on our part and we learned a lesson. Anyone who missed The Telescopes may be interested to hear that Bridget Hayden will be returning to the Miller on Friday the 28th November. Details here.

On 12th November we will be promoting our first show for nearly 7 years. Tooting Bizarre who put on gigs all over South East London have handed us the reigns for one night, allowing us to curate our own evening. We decided to push the boat out and really put on the sort of show we want to be a part of and are super chuffed to announce that we have secured The Telescopes. We have made plenty over the years of their influence on our sound and it'll be great to finally perform on the same bill with them.

As well as the Telescopes we are really pleased to have a couple of London debuts playing the night. Opening will be a solo set by Texan Christian Lee of New York based Center Divider, performing his first UK show. His sound is best described as Psychedelic Blues and will be the perfect introduction to the evening.
The main support we have handed over to Aspen Woods from Bristol. Despite having played shows in the US and mainland Europe, this will be their first gig in the Capital. Debut album New World Disorder is out now and a recent review describes their sound as "Shoegaze to stoner rock with Psychedelic tendencies". Previously they have opened up for Mono and UFO and we're anticipating a right royal wig out!
Ticket wise we've set them at a fiver advance and six on the door. Advance can be bought on We Got Tickets here. Doors will be 8pm and it'll all be wrapped up no later than 11.30.
We love to see you at all our shows but this one is extra special to us as it's our first proper go at putting on a night. We've put together an awesome line up and we really hope you can make it along and show your support.

11th Sept '08 @ the Miller, SE1 with Jesus Knives / Music of the Primes

Despite the planned 2 Bass show, Jim felt it may be a bit too soon after returning to risk us dying on our arse and therefore we went out as the normal 5 piece. It was however, our last show with Steve on Bass as he now heads off to do a similar favour for Art of Burning Water on their tour with Taint. The ideal is for a show with Jim & Steve in the not too distant.
We're eternally grateful to Steve for his time and effort over the last 10 months. He enabled us to carry on progressing our sound in Jim's absence. As well as playing Bass on the 'Sol' download we did for Cielo Liquido, we will be putting together a 4 track download of songs written with him to mark out his time with us. More on that nearer the time.
The show also saw out the last of the shows Jesus Knives had booked up prior to Nicks departure. They mixed some superb new stuff in with songs from the set played while Nick was still in the band. You can hear one of those new songs here. A great band & we can't wait to see where they take their sound now they have time off to write.

Somewhat late with this appraisal but it's better late than never...
Typical East End boozer downstairs with the Friday night Covers band/s etc, and then through the 'side door', up some stairs you have cosy sofas, a fireplace, Indie kids and a tidy bar area with nice big windows offering day light. A really nice space actually.
The night was opened by Time.Space.Repeat. Sonic Doom was doing a solo set this evening with just a Marshall Amp, pedal board and Guitar. As we understand it, Time.Space.Repeat play shows with anything from 1 to 5 members. SD announced at the start that he had no planned set list and was just going to play. I for one sensed an impending disaster but in the end should have had more faith. It pulled you in and was surprisingly coherent and listenable in the best way a single guitar & voice making a racket can! Definitely like to see them as a full band.
The Penny Sweets were an entirely different bag. I only caught half their set as we had to pop out for a bit. Violin, Keyboards, Female Vox and programmed drums, this was anything but a usual OUS gig match up. Really well crafted songs, each with a construction far beyond anything we would ever attempt and thoroughly pleasant sounding. It's difficult because this isn't my sort of music and therefore it doesn't seem fair to critique somehow. Everyone was given a free CD at the end along with some sweets. I battered the sweets immediately and will check the CD out in the next few days. Steve for one was raving about them on the way home.
After that, Kent 3 piece Sky:Lark! stepped up & 10 points for the Jazzmaster straight off! They were brutally loud, and after the first song had one of the promoters running over, fingers in ears, frantically adjusting knobs! You know you're doing things right when people who listen to bands night in night out get cold feet at the volume. Sound wise they are post rock with a tad of math in there. There's loads of bands with that sound knocking around and some of them are very average. Sky:Lark! are not average. I managed to capture 2 songs from their set. The sound is bad, mainly because the little Panasonic couldn't handle the volume, but you should be able to get the idea. 1. 2.
We had an average gig but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Byron found an interesting new way of positioning his guitar at the end of Hackeyed...check it out here if you like.

Many thanks to those of you who turned out and to those who were seeing us for the first time and made the effort to say hello.
Anyway, next show is 11th September at the Miller, London Br. with Jesus Knives.

Spectrum / The Early Years / Flowers of Hell

Byron & I made the short trip up town for this show which despite a few technical hiccups with PK's organ (ooh er) was a superb gig.
As with the recent MBV support shows, the set list included some of the standout Spacemen tracks, namely the Red Krayola cover Transparent Radiation, the 'Up Your's Mudhoney, this is how you should have done it' version of When Tomorrow Hits as well as the best gig finisher ever...Suicide.
I've You-Tubed the first two mentioned above, but Suicide will have to wait as my Quick time conversion software is playing up.

Anyone who has caught us live over the last year or so will have heard this prior to, during and after our set. It acts as the sixth band member really and continues the overall din between songs.

It was written / recorded by Byron and the original version we have lasts around an hour. Here he has put together a new stereo mix that clocks in at a rather more tame 10 minutes, just long enough to get the idea but short enough to prevent any potential car crashes etc!

Anyway, we hope you like it.

A couple of live tracks here then. Four were recorded on the day, but after extreme problems with the sound we can only really put our name to these two!
The plan had been to take both film and audio recordings of the show and see what we could put together. We didn't plan it out properly in the end and as a result all we are really left with is a half decent take of 'Bishops' and a live improvised jam, semi based around new track '44'.
Earlier in the day, Byron and I joined Rohame to perform a 40 minute drone/feedback piece that was also recorded. This will hopefully find it's way to being released at some point in the near future. There's currently a small clip of this on You Tube filmed by Steve. Check it out here.

Hello again!
So, next up we have 'Sol', or to give it its full title, 'Solamente Tontos y Caballos'. This was recorded especially for use on a superb Spanish radio show called 'Cielo Liquido'. The show, or rather the host Fernando Perez Herrero, has always been really supportive of our sound giving our music plenty of airtime over the years. When asked if we would like to submit a new and original piece of music for use, we jumped at the chance.
Much like 'Venus in Furs', this was again recorded rather D.I.Y in both Dan's rehearsal room and at home. It shows, so don't judge us too harshly! Included in this download are 3 separate mixes Original mix (despite being called the full version this is a pretty early draft and doesn't stand up too well against the others), edit and radio edit).
As for Cielo Liquido, head over here and check out the programme. You can either stream it live or download podcasts of previous shows and we can guarantee you will hear something new and engaging on each and every one.

Ok then, here's another one for anyone who's interested. File this one under 'Rough Demos'!!!
This was thrown together rather quickly as part of a compilation CD organised by Dan of GotAW to mark the closure after 10 years of Riot Club Rehearsal rooms in Hounslow Middx.
Roughly 10 bands got together and each recorded a cover version for it, with us choosing this VU classic.
Be warned, it's not big on production, but this is the very first thing recorded by us with the line up as it is today. We had 3 dodgy mics placed in our Dan's garage to capture the Drums and guide guitars with the rest layered up on the PC very quickly to meet the deadline.
Overall it's pretty ropey, but one of the main reasons for this Blog page is for us to offer up as much stuff as we can to catalogue our progress, be that demo work or the better recorded stuff like the previous two posts.

We had a great time the other night on a line-up consisting of friends bands. We're really fortunate to know some super talented people all doing their own thing and it was a great chance to gather everyone together in the same place and make a fat racket!
Opening the night was 'Ternary' playing their first ever show. Ternary is made up of Wayne who started up 'Ursa' a few years back and who has produced every OUS record so far, Dean who was a founder member of OUS way back when, as well as being Silent Front drummer until recently and Steve (ex Monkey Boy & Mifune) who is helping us out while Jim is away. In our circle of friends they are kind of a 'super band'!
Rather than go down the terrifying route of describing someones sound, pop over here and check out some of their set.

Ternary

Next up were 'Jesus Knives'. Nick on Guitar/Vox once tried out as our vocalist and although it didn't go anywhere we remained in contact and have played two shows with them in the last year or so. Nick was previously in 'Wino' who had a much more melodic sound than JK and when we first heard the transformation in the songs he was putting together it blew us away. Ben on drums was also in 'Mifune' with Steve. You can hear a song from their set here.

Jesus Knives

After JK were 'Guardians of the Ancient Wisdom'. Listening to a GotAW record would suggest a sound that would not normally sit snug alongside that of the other noisy lot playing on the bill. The Hip Hop leaning would at first hint at a lazy promoter, however, when you witness them at a show and realise that all the instruments are played out live, you're able to appreciate a dynamic very rarely seen with this kind of music. It fills the room and grabs your attention. OUS are not the most clued up in this field, but rest assured GotAW are doing something special. Dan has, alongside Wayne, helped to record and produce OUS in the past, working on both Lowry and TC&N.

Lowry - Debut single

As mentioned before, 'Dismemberment' highlights the progression of our sound since the new line-up has been in place. To those of you unfamiliar with us, this will mean very little and so with that in mind, here's our debut single 'Lowry'.
It was recorded in 2003 and was the 3rd release by the then new 'Genepool Records'. Mainly used to help get our name out there and assist with gigs, it did however, receive some good reviews and find it's way to some shops and online outlets. It also helped to secure a support slot with 'Girls Against Boys' and thereby fulfill an ambition of our then Drummer/Vocalist Lee. We did manage to sell out of it, so that must be a good thing! The B side 'Coins and Cards' also found it's way into an episode on Series 4 of the MTV show 'Dirty Sanchez'. Odd to think of it being played as some geezer gets his nuts nailed to an aeroplane wing or something!
It was recorded at the now sadly closed Riot Club in Hounslow Middx by Wayne (ex of Ursa) and Dan of 'Guardians of the Ancient Wisdom'. Again, we mixed and mastered it ourselves and in terms of production on a budget, it stands up pretty well.

'Coins & Cards' very occasionally find's it's way into our live set nowadays...very very occasionally!

Dismemberment EP

Ok then, anyone who has found their way here because they know our stuff already will probably have this by now, but for those who have stumbled across us and may be interested in hearing our cacophony, here's our current EP, 'Dismemberment', for free. We have put this up for nowt because it's a good way for people to hear what we have been doing since the line-up changed.
Basically, we have returned to our original intentions, those being to produce music that would sit happily alongside the best noise/drone rock stuff that was knocking around in the mid to late 80's. We never hide the fact that we are heavily influenced by Spacemen 3 and Taste era Telescopes, alongside the much more obvious and more commonly mentioned MBV.

Dismemberment was recorded at a friends studio in Greenwich, South East London for a hundred quid. We self mixed / mastered it and as a result it has a very raw edge. It does however, offer a good indication of the intensity we are looking to achieve, and trust us, the new material will have plenty more of the energy you'll hear on this.

Well here we are then. An attempt to create a place outside of our .com and MySpace page where we can place updates and the odd free track. There probably won't be a great deal going up here just yet, but we have a busy few months coming up with a new album in the pipeline and it's a chance to post up the odd bit of demo work and the odd photo etc.
Let's see what happens anyway. Hopefully it'll be worth the 30 seconds it took to set up!
